A 74 gun larger 3rd Rate she was the 7th ship in the history of the Royal Navy to be named Ajax, after the Greek hero.

HMS Ajax was launched 3rd March 1798 and after seeing action in Egypt, she fought in Nelson's column at Trafalgar.
