I don’t know what it is, but wargamers can’t resist buy ‘just a few more figures’… For a brand of hobbyists who spend there time staring at and painting lots of shiny things (Yes I include plastic as well) we can’t keep our hand off yet more shiny stuff.
I am guilty as anyone else. There seems wargamer’s maxim that must state that you have to have at least twice as many figures unpainted as painted. A bit like the ability to hoard polystyrene and cardboard. As I sit here typing I can see boxes stuffed full of Warhammer Fantasy armies of Chaos, daemons, Dark Elves, Chaos Dwarfs, Goblins and a huge amount of Skaven. Odd 40K figures that have taken my fancy as a painter, including a still sealed box of Harlequins. 15mm ACW and Napoleonic figures destined for Black Powder game one day. British Napoleonic battalions and rifles, Wild West figures, Republican Romans 28mm fresh from Aventine, Viking long ships, FOW Stugs and much much more.
Are we all completely mad? I have rationalised and sold a lot of stuff off but still I hoard “…just in case…” and because “I haven’t got one like that”. I tell myself every year that I will get all my armies painted and finished but the acquisition always outstrips the production of the finished article.
Can you imagine what that would be like though? Imagine that you painted your last wargames miniature. All your armies were complete. Nothing in the cupboard but gaming heaven.
What would you do if you finished painting all the figures you had?
I think I would be lost as well as getting some sleep instead of late night sessions.
Maybe strip naked and run through Newport shouting “Eureka” (Mind you it would have to be a lot warmer than today!)
Faint with shock certainly
